St. Thomas More Pray for us.

                          A GODLY MEDITATION
(written By Sir Thomas More, Knight, While He Was Prisoner In The Tower of London, A.D. 1534)

Give me thy grace, good Lord,
To set the world at nought.
To set my mind fast upon Thee
And not to hang upon the blast of men's mouths.
To be content to be solitary,
Not to long for worldly company.
Little and little utterly to cast off the world.
And rid my mind of all the business thereof.
Not to long to hear of any worldly things,
But that the hearing of worldly fantasies may be to me displeasant

Gladly to be thinking of God,
Piteously to call for His help.
To lean unto the comfort of God.
Busily to labour to love Him.
To know mine own vilitie and wretchedness.
To humble and meeken myself under the mighty hand of God.

To bewail my sins passed,
For the purging of them, patiently to suffer adversity.
Gladly to bear my purgatory here.
To be joyful of tribulations.
To walk the narrow way that leadeth to life.
To bear the cross with Christ.
To have the last things in remembrance.
To have ever before mine eye, my death, which is ever at hand.

To make death no stranger to me.
To forsee and consider the everlasting fire of hell.
To pray for pardon before the judge come.
To have continually in mind, the passion which Christ suffered for me.
For his benefits unceasingly to give him thanks.
To buy the time again that I before have lost.

To abstain from vain confabulations.
To eschew light foolish mirth and gladness.
Recreations not necessary to cut off
Of worldly substance, friends, liberty, life and all to set the loss at right nought, for the winning of Christ.
To think my most enemies my best friends.
For the bretheren of Joseph could never have done him so much good with their love and favour, as they did with their malice and hatred.
These minds are more to be desired of every man than all the treasure of all the Princes and Kings Christian and heathen were it gathered and laid together all upon one heap.

                                      Village Rosary
Then came the evening service. The tapers
                               gleamed from the altar.
Fervent and deep was the voice of the priest,
                              and the people responded,
Not with their lips alone, but their hearts; and
                                        the Ave Maria
Sang they, and fell on their knees, and their
                          souls, with devotion translated,
Rose on the ardour of prayer, like Elijah
                                 ascending to Heaven.

St. Louis IX Pray for us
            Priest and the Soldier

           ( The Priest Hernandez speaks)
WELL mayst thou say that these are fearful times,
Therefore be firm, be patient! There is strength,
And a fierce instinct, e'en in common souls
To bear up manhood with a stormy joy,
When red swords meet in lightning! But our task
Is more and nobler! We have to endure,
And to keep watch, and to arouse a land,
And to defend an altar. Think on this,
And gird your hearts with silent fortitude,
                       Suffering, yet hoping all things.

                             THE PRIESTLY ROBE

Touch it lightly, or not at all.
Let it not fall !
Let not a fabric so august
Trail in the dust!
`Tis a costly thing,
Woven by love in suffering.
`Twas Jesus` parting gift to men.
When the Lord rose to Heaven again,
His latest breathing fell on it.
A mystery hides within its folds.
Quickened by sacramental breath,
It holds
The power of life and death.
Would you sully it ? Would you rend it?
Is there a Christian would not defend it-
A robe so costly and so rare,
So wonderfully fair ?
Woe to the hand profane
Woe to the heart ungracious,
Woe to the tongue unheeding,
Would dare to cast a stain
On a vestment made so precious
By such costly bleeding!

II

I know this robe and its history,
And what strange virtue goeth forth
From its hem to bless the earth;
And I adore the mystery
That gives it grace,
In Jesus` name, to soothe and heal.
With more than human tenderness
I prize the priestly order;
And, while the reverent knee I kneel,
I do not see beneath the border
Frail feet of clay,
But seek to find, if so I may,
By feeling,
Some gracious thread which will convey
To my sore spirit healing.
Vicars of Christ ! deem me not rude,
If nearer than is wont I press me;
But turn and bless me
Amid the kneeling multitude.

The priestly robe  Rev. Clarence Walworth  anno 1888

Amid the kneeling multitude.

                 The Final Gauge
If THAT for which we labor here
                                 Be worthy our endeavor,
The final gauge we need not fear,
                                 Since Heaven fails us never!
                                 Though wrong may seem to vanquish right;
                                 Though truth be crushed and hid from sight;
Fear not the outcome of the fight!--
                                 God`s laws will stand forever!

The end we cannot always see
Nor can we understand
   That what man deems futility,
     God may have wisely planned!
Trust then in Him, and, come what may,
Press boldly onward day by day;--
Knowing that all things, now and aye,
   Are in His holy hand!
